How I get things done

After Graduating

Graduating from Baker College in 2023, I spent the next year trying to decide on a career path before deciding to open an e-commerce website. Getting the idea after watching a YouTube video on Erica's (from Big Cat Creative) career journey, I came up with Sunskinmountain, where I intended to sell Squarespace templates and Canva Designs. Spending another few months finding a free hosting platform, I put together the website and advertised wherever I could (Facebook, DeviantArt, Google). However, after months of getting nowhere, along with realizing what I actually wanted to do, I ultimately decided to dismantle the website and instead try my luck with designing websites.

2025: Upwork & Fiverr

Joining Upwork in the beginning of 2025, I was fully prepared to begin applying for freelance projects, believing that I would receive free Connects upon creating an account. Only for that to no longer apply to new users. 😔

And, because I didn't want to spend money unless I knew I was going to land a client, I used the only workaround I could; look for clients that included a website and contact them directly, leaving my Upwork profile link to let them know I wasn't trying to scam them. Unfortunately though, receiving a lot of scams from Fiverr and ghosting from UpWork (as well as Indeed, which I joined months after the prior platforms), only further discouraged me. Especially after spending hours following suggestions from YouTubers for the platforms.

While waiting for news from these platforms, I decided to brush up on my designing skills. Having already watched and practiced along with YouTube tutorials and platforms like SoloLearn and WildLearner, I decided to try FreeCodeCamp. After completing the course for that platform, and again, more ghosting from the platforms I joined, I then deleted my Upwork and Fiverr accounts and turned to Reddit in the beginning of 2026.

2026: The light at the end of the tunnel

Despite hearing how toxic it could be, I was desperate to get others' advice, as well as see if I could offer my services...only to receive plenty of hurtful/unhelpful comments, though there were a few genuinely helpful people. One of them pointing me in the direction of 4TC—the savior of my career! Since taking the course, I've learned so much about the principles of design and am able to see where my old designs went wrong (for the most part). I’ve quickly adopted the 4TC Instructor’s system of working;

Research the project brief > Create a moodboard > Gather notes from said research > Design the brief’s goal > Proofread > Send for feedback

Where I once struggled for days on what content to add in a website or design, now only takes me a day thanks to 4TC. Surprising myself, I soon discovered that I could get a project done within a week, though it could take two or three depending on the wait time for feedback and the project itself.

Spare Time

In my spare time, you'll find me on Contra, where I apply for gigs and showcase my work (like these Popping Booth and Ferris Wheel games). I also frequently watch YouTube, create my own videos for a reaction channel, go to church gatherings for other young adults, and spend time with my cat Sparky!
